Principles of Alternative Rural Design* . . .

Identify primary conservation areas.

Identify secondary conservation areas.

Identify potential development areas.

Locate potential house sites.

Design road alignments and trails.

Draw in the lot lines.
Quotes from Randall for your thoughts . . .

Conventional zoning regulations inevitably mean that every square foot of land becomes someone’s front yard, backyard, street, sidewalk, or driveway.

Garages should not dominate street scapes.

County regulations do not stand up to scrutiny for saving sights or buildings.

Wider streets only bring on faster and more cars.

Thirty-two percent more dangerous — wider streets over narrow.

Fifty percent more expensive to pave a 30 foot street over a 20 foot street.

Design with nature will work with nonprofits and towns but not developers.

Look at other communities and see what they did with low budgets.
